If you’re considering physiotherapy in Edmonton, Edmonton Wellness Clinic helps clients feel prepared before care begins. In this guide, you will learn what to wear for physiotherapy so your session feels easier from the start.

Clothing Choices That Help Your Assessment

When choosing what to wear for physiotherapy, opt for comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. The right outfit helps your therapist assess your range of motion without fabric limiting your body. Stick to these tips so you do not have to second-guess your outfit later:

Loose-fitting clothes: Wear relaxed, lightweight clothing that gives your body room to move and helps prevent overheating.
Athletic wear: Sweatpants or yoga pants allow guided exercises without fabric pulling against your body.
Flexible clothing: Soft, stretchy fabrics help you bend or sit without feeling restricted during your assessment, and they allow your therapist to assess your range of motion without restriction.
Easy-to-adjust layers: Simple layers make treatment access easier without leaving you uncomfortable or exposed.
Supportive footwear: Running shoes with proper arch support can help you feel steadier during balance work.

Outfit Tips Based on Your Pain Area

Different pain areas may require different clothing choices to allow your therapist to assess movement clearly. If you are unsure what to wear for physiotherapy, the sections below explain what works best for each concern.

Shoulder or Neck Pain

For shoulder or neck concerns, wear a tank top or sleeveless shirt to give your therapist clearer access during the assessment. This makes it easier to check upper body movement without tight sleeves limiting how your shoulder or neck responds. A sports bra can add support for patients who prefer one during arm raises or posture checks.

Knee or Foot Concerns

For knee or foot concerns, choose mid-length shorts or cropped pants that can roll above the knee comfortably. Your therapist may need to watch how your knee moves during standing exercises or a walking-based assessment. Supportive shoes can also help if your session includes balance work or gait checks.

Back or Hip Pain

For back or hip pain, wear flexible clothing that allows bending without pulling tightly across your body. Loose pants can also help your therapist assess hip movement without fabric limiting your comfort. Your therapist may discuss draping or clothing adjustments if clearer access is needed during assessment. This helps you stay covered while still allowing proper movement checks.

Pelvic Floor Sessions

For pelvic floor sessions, choose soft clothing that feels comfortable during seated movement and gentle exercises. Easy-to-change clothing can also help you feel more prepared before the appointment begins. You may perform pelvic or breathing exercises during the visit, so avoid tight-fitting fabric while seated.

Clothes To Avoid During Physiotherapy

Some clothing choices can limit movement or make hands-on assessment more difficult during your visit. Avoid the following so your therapist can guide movement more easily:

Jeans: Stiff denim can limit lower-body movement during assessment.
Dresses or short skirts: These can ride up during stretches, leaving you feeling uncomfortable during treatment.
Very tight clothing: Restrictive outfits can make movement checks and access to treatment more difficult.
Heavy layers: Thick sweaters or bulky jackets can make checks less comfortable.

Helpful Items To Bring to Your Session

Beyond your outfit, packing a few extras can make your physiotherapy appointment more productive. A water bottle helps you stay comfortable when movement or exercise warms your body.

Your physical therapist may also give home exercise instructions during the visit. A notebook gives you a place to record those steps in your own words. Some people remember movements better when they write them down rather than rely on handouts later.

If you feel nervous about your first visit, bring a friend or family member for support. They can also be a second pair of ears for instructions you may want to review at home.
